ABOUT
Photographer and video artist Sergio Belinchón was born in Valencia, Spain in 1971. Since 1997, Belinchón has launched his famous artistic career by using both media – photography and video – to produce a series of works. His work takes an ingenious approach to 19th- and 20th-century portraiture and representation. His latest project for GE Galería, Álbum, takes his obsession and interest in old portraits as a point of departure. Belinchón interrupts the portraits—acquired in Berlin’s flea markets—by physically defacing the subjects and recreating a new mode of thinking about portraiture as an art historical genre.
Belinchón has exhibited in GE Galería (Mexico City/Monterrey), Galerie Berlin (Berlin), Invaliden Galerie (Berlin), Palacio Montcada (Fraga), and Galeria La Caja Negra (Madrid) among other galleries. His work is in held in international collections at Museo Nacional Reina Sofia, Fisher Gallery, Fonds Nationale d’Art Contemporaine de France, MUSAC, and the Coca-Cola Foundation in Spain among many others. Belinchón studied at the School of Fine Arts in Valencia, the School of Spain in Paris, and the Academy of Spain in Rome.
Belinchón lives and works in Berlin.
